PNS is a mental health clinic born of the idea that individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities are unique and need a provider who has experience managing these needs. We work with each individual's team of caregivers and their families to develop the best plan for the best outcome. It is our goal to talk to each patient at a level they can understand and include their input on all treatment choices.
Our Nurse Practitioner has been in the shoes of many of the families she provides care for. She is not only a wife but a mom of 3 boys, all who have ADHD. The family has worked through the ups and downs of life with a child who is developmentally delayed due to a congenital brain malformation. At 22 he is now able to proudly tell others he has a condition and is not ashamed to say he struggles sometimes. His condition has not only caused the learning challenges, but it has also been accompanied by anxiety, depression, OCD, and Autism.
Carla Payne, FNP was born and raised in southwest Michigan and moved to Indiana in 1995. She attended Western Michigan University and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis for prerequisite coursework. She transferred to the University of Indianapolis (U of I) where she completed her associate and bachelor's degrees in nursing. In 2009 she returned to U of I in the Family Nurse Practitioner track. Carla has been in the nursing field for over 20years. She is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
Out of necessity, while working in an FQHC as an FNP, her experienced has grown more specialized to working in mental health treatment. She has experience in working in a variety of settings including outpatient office, assisted living facilities, residential facilities, and long-term care facilities. She was able to utilize this experience during the COVID-19 pandemic in the urgent care setting, the COVID-19 Hotline for the state of Indiana, and the National COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline, by managing teams of medical professionals helping others through difficult situations.
For the past year, she has had a sole focus on managing psychiatric patients in a variety of institutional and home settings. After learning of a large number of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) losing their psychiatric care providers, she decided to step in and help. Due to her own personal experience with managing mental illness in a child with IDD, she made the decision to serve this population exclusively. IDD patients are complex and have a unique set of needs in their healthcare. It affects not just their mental health but also their physical health and a team approach is essential.
Carla has been married to Tom for 25 years. They have 3 boys, all who have graduated high school. They have 3 cockatiels: Doolie, Tango, and Blizzard. They also have 3 rescued fur babies: Bella, Stella, and Chili; and 3 grand dogs: Sage, Jasper, and Chico.
